Meet your teachers

Mrs Britton

Hi, a lot of you already know me very well! My name is Mrs. Britton and I am Y5/6 class teacher and assistant headteacher here at Thrybergh Primary. I have been at Thrybergh for a long time, around 25 years, and for most of that time I have taught Y6 or Y5/6. I absolutely love teaching in upper Key Stage 2 and my favourite subjects are maths, science and P.E.


I have a daughter who is hoping to go to Thomas Rotherham College in September so we are eagerly  waiting GCSE results this summer.


I really can not wait to welcome you all into Y5/6 so that we can all have some brilliant learning experiences together. We will be really aiming high this year and I am so excited about the fun we will have together.

Mrs Platts

Hello, most of you know me because I have had the pleasure of teaching you from Foundation. I’m looking forward to working with you again. I would like you all to know what I enjoy doing out of school. I enjoy going shopping and going to see shows with my daughter, we have seen a lot!! I love spending time with my family, we have lovely BBQs in the summer and Christmas is my favourite time of the year, I love spending the day with all of my family.

I’m looking forward to working alongside Mrs Britton again. Let’s all work together so we can all achieve!

Class Information

It will be amazing to have you all in Y5/6 but there is lots of key information you need. We start the day promptly at 8:40am and there will always be a morning task to do during register time so it is vital that you are in school on time ready to learn. Morning tasks are often practise of a skill we have learnt the day before or something we have found hard as a group so that first session is crucial and Mrs. Platts and I are always there to help.


Reading is crucial in Y5/6. Our school expectation is for every child to read to an adult at home at least 3 times each week. Reading is used in every single subject so ther more you read the easier it is! We are going to use Boom Reader to record reading and details of how to use Boom Reader have been sent out. Children who read every day generally find school work easier as they are more fluent readers. Homework will be set on Friday. There will be a mixture of reading, Spelling and Grammar – SPAG, Writing and Maths. All homework must be handed in on Tuesday to give time for accurate marking and feedback. We have a homework raffle in Y5/6. If your homework is completed and handed in on time you are given a raffle ticket then on Friday we have a prize draw and the winner gets a pick from the prize bag! BUT – you have to be in it to win it – on time!


We have P.E. on Monday and Friday. You will need to bring your full kit including trainers on Monday and leave it in school until Friday. I love P.E. and I love working together with our P.E. coaches to get the best ut of our P.E. sessions so please make sure you always have kit.
Finally, a note on back packs and hats- please get one. You will have a lot of homework books, kit and other essentials to carry and you will need one for camping so it really is a must.


Last but very much not least, Mrs Platts and I have worked with each other for a very long time and we want you to know that we want the best for you but if ever there is a problem in school you can talk to us at any time. We are here to help and to listen so don’t hold back. If you have a worry please come to us. We are looking forward to having you all in our class so much.

Our Learning

All learning in primary school is rigorous and challenges our pupils , in Y5/6 it really does go up a gear. We want the very best for you and we try to make all aour learning hands- on and relevant. We will be reading a book called Goodnight Mr.Tom to begin with and we will access many more quality texts. You will read books not extracts and be able to get the ‘feel’ of real books. We will write for many different purposes and explore narrative, diary entries, discursive and persuasive writing.

In maths we will learn about a range of themes. there is a heavy emphasis on understanding fractins and you will tlearn to add, subtract, multiply and dived fractions. You will study fraction, decimal and percentage equivalence and use these skills to solve problems. In addition to this we will also study measurement, shape and statistics.


History and geography play a key role in our learning and this year we will be learning about Worls War 2, Modern history – the 1984 Miner’s strike and migration in the 20th century in History. In Geography we will study the cities of Europe, Natural disasters and coasts. It’s going to be an exciting year!


In addition to this, we are lucky enough to have specialist music teachers who come into school every week to teach music and this means everyone is able to learn about music through voice and playing a range of instruments.
