Boccia Tournament!

On Tuesday 14th October, Rotherham Leisure Complex was filled with excitement and energy as children from Thrybergh Primary joined twenty schools from across the borough for a day of inclusive sport at the Rotherham School Boccia Tournament. Organised in partnership with School Games and Abbey School, the event celebrated teamwork and talent across both mainstream and special schools.

Six pupils were entered, who competed in a series of morning fixtures to determine placements for the afternoon games. The tournament format meant that all teams had the opportunity to play several matches, with the afternoon fixtures based on their performance earlier in the day. Every match was played as a best-of-three “ends,” giving children multiple chances to show off their skills and strategic thinking.

The competition was expertly umpired by student Sports Leaders from Abbey School, who took on the responsibility of officiating games, measuring distances, and recording scores. Their confident decision-making and professionalism helped ensure that the day ran smoothly and fairly.

Throughout the event, pupils displayed impressive sportsmanship, communication, and tactical awareness, making the most of each game and supporting one another throughout the day.

Chloe Turton from Rotherham Schools Games said, “A massive thank you goes to Katie Crowley and Jill Newbolt at Abbey School for coordinating the tournament so effectively. Their hard work and dedication were key to making the event a success for the 120 participants and the 18 sports leaders who helped run the event. We’d also like to extend our sincere thanks to Children’s Capital of Culture, whose Creative Grants fund covered the hire of the sports hall and the medals awarded to every participant – ensuring that every child left with a well-deserved reminder of their achievement”.

The Boccia Tournament was a shining example of inclusive sport at its best – where competition, collaboration and community came together to create a memorable day for all involved. Well done, Thrybergh Primary!
