On Tuesday 30th September, pupils across Thrybergh Primary had a very special treat when they were visited by Jenny York, a published author, who came to talk all about the magic of stories and the writing process.
Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage were lucky enough to have Jenny introduce them to some of the characters from her book, Sugar and Blaze Walk the Plank. The children were so excited to be involved in bringing the story to life and finding out all about the characters and their adventures. Jenny was truly inspiring, and every child was engaged throughout – hopefully sparking some future authors among them!
Across the rest of the school, the children were equally captivated as Jenny shared insights into how she creates her characters, builds her plots, and develops exciting ideas into full stories. They were fascinated to hear about the journey of a writer and what it takes to get from the first spark of inspiration to a published book on the shelf.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was when the pupils had the chance to recreate some of Jenny’s stories themselves, stepping into the shoes of her characters and bringing the narratives to life through role play. The classrooms were filled with energy and laughter as everyone embraced the chance to act out key moments from her books.
Not only did the children enjoy listening to Jenny’s stories, but they also learned valuable lessons about the importance of creativity, resilience, and never giving up on your ideas. The afternoon was a perfect balance of fun and inspiration, leaving pupils buzzing with excitement and full of new ideas for their own writing.
Events like these also form part of the WPT English Curriculum, which is dedicated to giving pupils rich experiences and a wide range of resources to support their learning. By meeting real authors and engaging with literature in new and exciting ways, children develop both their love of reading and their confidence as writers.
We are so proud of everyone who attended – well done!
