Y1 Maths Games

Y1 have been putting their recent learning into action in Maths!

Last week, we made number lines with ten frames and this week we have been counting forwards and backwards within 20. To practise, we played ‘Race to 20’ with a partner – rolling a dice and then flipping a card to see whether we were counting forward or back to that number.

This game could be easily played at home too – great cooperation and lots of fun!

This learning links directly to our Maths and Numeracy curriculum, which emphasises building strong number sense and fluency in counting. Using ten frames, number lines and practical games helps our children to:

  • Understand how numbers relate to each other
  • Develop fluency in counting forwards and backwards
  • Gain confidence using visual representations to support calculation

These core skills are a vital foundation for all future mathematical learning and ensure our children can fully access the wider curriculum.
